This is the second year I've had the opportunity to attend the local private game convention called IndyCon. This year, I played several games, met new people and enjoyed the board gaming hobby during the course of a three-day weekend. I'll share a list of the games I played and some of my favorite games from this event. A Little About IndyCon Before I explain which games were my favorite of the weekend, it makes sense to provide some context about the convention itself. IndyCon started as a small group of local gamers who invited friends for a weekend of gaming. This invitation-style format has been at the core of the event as it has grown over the past 14 years. This convention is not heavy with the latest hotness or the newest games, rather it is a large group of gaming friends who know other gamers wanting get together for a weekend and play games. All types of games both old and new get played. There are a couple of tournaments including Crokinole and Ticket to Ride. Most of the games are either scheduled games individuals have organized or players select from the large library at the event and play an impromptu game. There are some game industry sponsors and supporters in attendance, however there isn't a vendor hall or booths. I have provided a link to the IndyCon website, to learn more click here. List of Games Played While at the event, I primarily played games with a couple of friends of mine and their extended group of friends. Many of the games we played reflect the interests of both myself and the groups in which I played. Below is my list of games played while at IndyCon 2020.
Favorite Games Played at IndyCon Let me tell you which games that I enjoyed the most, keeping in mind that part of the fun of playing is affected by the people, timing, mood, etc... This is my list of favorite gameplay experiences and not so much a review of each game. I would be more than happy to play any of these games again. They were each enjoyable in their own respect. This list reflects the ones that left me with the highest level of interest in playing again and peaked my interest the most. Architects of the West Kingdom This medium-weight game had a lot going for it. There was a light theme with quick gameplay that was also strategic. The artwork and illustrations are excellent and the game components were very nice. This is one I can see would easily work within many different circles, as it's not too long nor too cerebral. A great all-around game. Cthulu Wars I have played Cthulu Wars a couple times before, enjoying it each time. In this game we had some of the newest expansion factions available and the miniatures had been painted with a wash which provided a little more of a dark mood. Who can resist large miniatures of HP Lovecraft inspired monsters battling it out for supremacy on Earth? This game was a lot of fun and I want to thank the game owner Tim for scheduling an additional session which allowed me to get to play. Reykholt This Uwe Rosenberg designed game was probably one of the lighter ones I played over the weekend. Something about the pleasant artwork by Klemens Franz and the gardening theme that was just the right thing needed in the middle of a convention full of strategy, lengthy games and other distractions and commotion. The simple gameplay with clever mechanisms made Reykholt a pleasure to play. Teotihuacan As difficult as the name is to pronounce... the game is enjoyable to play. The strategy and decisions that have to be made in this worker (dice) placement game are deep and strategic. I didn't do very well in score, however the gameplay was rewarding. Building upon the Aztec pyramid in the center made for great table presence. Everyone in the game seemed to be struggling at times with deciding what were the best decisions and strategy. I definitely hope I get the opportunity to play this one again, multiple times. Final Thoughts On Games from IndyCon
